Service Opportunities

Being of service is synonymous with being a Christian. We are called with always asking, “What does God want me to do here?” Whether you “calling” is to participate in a ministry within the church itself, such as serving coffee or tending the garden or being part of a Vestry Team, or you find your “calling” in the community with activities like Habitat for Humanity or the AIDS Project of Loaves and Fishes, St. George’s has many opportunities for you. Below are some of the many ways you can serve people through our church.

Vestry Teams

St. George’s has chosen to organize the work of the church into Vestry Teams that come together for continuing needs or for specific projects. (The Vestry is the governing body of every Episcopal Church). The way it works is, if a parishioners has a passion for being involved on a continuing basis with a particular aspect of church life, such as tending to the Buildings and Grounds, Financial management, Outreach, etc., they can serve as a member of the Vestry Team that coordinates all the activities and projects of that team. If someone finds their interest is more toward a specific project or activity, then we encourage them to lend their energy to that particular project. It all depends on your interests, time and energy. However you want to answer the call, we welcome your participation.
The ongoing Vestry Teams currently serving St. George’s are: Buildings & Grounds, Finances & Personnel, Outreach, Evangelism & Marketing, Education and Parish Life & Celebration. Following is a brief description of what each team does.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS (B&G) is the team that oversees the maintenance and upkeep of our buildings and grounds. They make sure the heating, plumbing and electrical systems work properly. They work with the parish gardeners to make sure our gardens are always beautiful. They also are the group that oversees the project whenever a part of the church is being renovated. Service opportunities with B&G include being a continuing member of the team as well as working on specific projects, like the garden or a room renovation.

FINANCES AND PERSONNEL (Finances) is the team that make sure our parish stays financially healthy and that insures all of the bookkeeping details of running the parish are always up-to-date. Service opportunities with Finance include being part of the Team that makes financial decisions as well as specific projects like our fall Stewardship Drive that sets the budget and raises the operating funds of the church.

OUTREACH is the team that looks out into the community and identifies ways St. George’s members can serve that community. Team members plan all Outreach activities and giving and coordinate the many opportunities to service on individual Outreach programs. These individual programs include Habitat for Humanity, Loaves & Fishes, STEP and many others.

EVANGELISM AND MARKETING is the team that constantly seeks to take the good news of Christ in our lives out to the world, both as a way to give voice to the message, as well as inviting the world to come to St. George’s to explore the message further. They are the people who decide what message we, as members of St. George’s, want to send into the world and how best to get that message across. Evangelism is a continuing ministry, but it also has individual project opportunities in creating marketing campaigns, developing greeter programs, and preparing literature that can be given to guests so that they may learn more about how the good news is lived in our church.

CHILDREN’S EDUCATION is the team that teaches Sunday school, that develops our education program, and that trains the teachers called to serve our youngest members. The team has developed a 6 week rotating program for teachers that keeps them fresh and energetic when their teaching our kids as well as giving the opportunity to remain actively connected with worship services. While education is an ongoing ministry, their are shorter term opportunities for ministry as well, such as working on the Christmas Pageant, escorting on outings, participating on crafts projects, etc.

PARISH LIFE AND CELEBRATION (PLC) is the team that ministers to the pastoral needs of the parish and that celebrates the social life of the church and its members. The PLC Team makes sure that parishioners know when a member is ill or hospitalized or when a member needs a ride, meal, or help in recovering from an illness. The PLC Team also work on activities such as the Corn Feed and other social events. Money raised by these activities is given to Outreach and community organizations at the end of the year. Opportunities abound for involvement on a continuing basis or as a support for any of the PLC Team activities.
